Afghan policeman sacrifices self to shield others
An Afghan security police officer and eight children were killed in Khost City when a suicide bomber attempted to pass a checkpoint. The policeman seized and embraced the bomber just before the explosion in an attempt to dull the blast and protect bystanders.
Hailed as a hero for sacrificing his life, the officer named Murad Khan noticed a man approaching the checkpoint. Suspecting the man was concealing a bomb vest, Khan grabbed the man tightly in an attempt to shield a group of children in the area.
The blast killed Khan, the bomber and eight children. Two other children were also injured.
Authorities say the attack was probably likely mean to target coalition forces who were conducting training exercises with Afghan police in the area.
