Maya Laser Mapping

This 3-D view of the ancient Maya city of Ceibal was constructed using LiDAR data.

With airborne LiDAR technology, powerful laser beams penetrate the dense jungle canopy to map the ground below.

This lets archaeologists study areas they never would have been able to access on foot.
