The science behind muirburn - The British Uplands Podcast

Muirburn is the process of creating small controlled fires on the uplands, usually for the purpose of grouse shooting and agriculture. Only the surface foliage burns, but the flame doesn’t reach the moss and peat below. It’s known as a ‘cool’ fire. It is used to stimulate new growth and create a variety of habitat types for different species. However, there is a lot of controversy about whether this should continue, primarily due to climate change and rewilding. However, Dr Andreas Heinemeyer from the University of York has just released a study which tests a lot of these preconceptions and it certainly not what I was expecting !
