Chechnya-Ceasefire/Rebel Leader Maskhadov
(1 Jun 1996) T/I 10:00:15
Russian soldiers serving in Chechnya and the local residents of
Grozny have been able to relax a little because of the cease-fire
that took effect on Saturday (1/6).
But a standoff between Russian troops and rebels at the town of
Shali threatened the cease-fire almost before it began. The
Chechen military leader, Aslan Maskhadov, warned in an interview
that, if the Russians did not keep their promises, the Chechen
rebels would resume the war.
