Project POEM
Visually impaired middle and high school students attended the UA Sky School as part of Project POEM, a National Science Foundation-funded UA project designed to encourage young people with visual impairments toward STEM careers.
The students engaged in a variety of activities, including insect identification, water quality assessment, nature hikes, and telescope viewings augmented with sound. They also heard presentations from UA scientists, learned the ins and outs of conducting research, and gave their own scientific presentations.
The weeklong experience kicked off a larger 14-month UA initiative, funded by a grant of more than $1 million from the National Science Foundation, called Project POEM (Project-Based Learning Opportunities and Exploration of Mentorship for Students with Visual Impairments in STEM). The project aims to get visually impaired middle and high school students interested in STEM careers.
The Sky School is part of the UA Science Sky Center located at the top of Mt. Lemmon, Arizona.
