[Longplay, No Commentary] MechWarrior 4: Vengeance (PC, 2000) 1080p Full Play-through
MechWarrior 4: Vengeance is the fourth instalment in the MechWarrior franchise, and the first where Microsoft laid their magic hands on the franchise. The game was released in 2000 for Windows. It tells a story of vengeance, where the player must lead his group of loyalists to take down opposing forces who betrayed and murdered his family, in order to restore the rightful person to the throne in his home planet.
Having played the preceding MechWarrior games and not being biased by nostalgia, it is safe to say MechWarrior 4 took a few steps backwards, sadly. As a starter, I don't get the same feeling of piloting a mech like I had in MechWarrior 3, instead it felt like I was floating like a drone with some advanced camera-stabilizing gimbal loaded with deadly weapons. The graphics also looked worse compared to that in MechWarrior 3 for some reason. The game mechanics is not something I'm used to until I had put a few hours into the game. For example, destroying a side torso does not also destroy its associated arm, but continuous damage to the destroyed side torso (and perhaps legs too) will actually do internal damage for an easier kill. Lastly, the AI. Oh man, more often than not you'll find your lancemates getting lost in urban combat while you're getting pounded by aimbots alone. You must spend some time for them to catch up which negatively affects the pacing of the game.
I could rant further but that's not really fun is it? MechWarrior 4: Vengeance is not a bad game per se, it just falls short compared to the earlier games that were supposedly to be much more limited by technology. It does have some decently long single player campaign spanning across multiple environments and has rudimentary branched endings. And from people's words, the multiplayer was the bomb. Perhaps my experience with the game would have been better if I weren't playing on Veteran difficulty using a Logitech E3DP that's starting to have a mind of its own. (doubt)
