Tourbillon Allure
When it comes to expensive possessions that seem a little unnecessary, you’ll always find watches on that list. Tourbillon Watches are one of those insanely expensive watches. But before we get into the truth behind the value of these watches, we have to take things back to how these watches came to be.
Why Tourbillons Exist
While studying watches of that era, Breguet realized that gravity played a significant role in how watches worked. And since most men kept their pocket watches upright in their waistcoats, the gravitational pull would eventually wear down the watches and ultimately alter the way they worked.
Regulation
The Tourbillon wasn’t initially made to be a watch. Instead, it was merely a regulator. But that same regulator changed how watches were made forever. The regulator was a minor adjustment Brequet made that would ensure there weren’t any extra gaps in the watch chamber, which could cause the watch to lose accuracy based on its positioning.
Tourbillon success
On June 26, 1801, Breguet was finally able to get a ten year patent for this regulator, and by October 1806, he made a full, working model of the watch and released it in Paris. People were amazed by how this man could remove all inconsistencies surrounding the “time measuring devices” and create the “perfect watch.”
Exclusivity
Today, centuries later, these perfect watches are still the prized possessions they once were. True Tourbillons start at around $50,000 thousand dollars and can easily get in the multi-millions in aftermarket value, such as the George Daniels Spring Case Tourbillon, which sold at auction for a little over 4 million dollars.
What makes tourbillon watches SO expensive?
It’s simply because of the way it's made.
Tourbillons are one of the most complex watches to put together in the entire world. Everything from the tiniest of screws to the actual putting together of it all is so complicated that not any watchmaker can get it done. They need to be seasoned experts to even attempt to mess around with one of these.
Celebrity Owner
To the people that buy tourbillons, owning one truly means they’ve “made it.” So, companies continued to make them, and people continued to buy them. Take for example, Connor McGregor and his Jacob and Company tourbillon watches. In an Instagram post, McGregor showed off his Jacob and Co. Astronomia Tourbillon Baguette watch in Rose Gold, which he purchased for roughly $1 Million dollars.
“Cheap” Tourbillons
In 2007, the “cheap” Tourbillons were announced. These watches still cost a hefty $20,000 thousand dollars a pop back then, but they weren’t nearly the amount the originals were. However, that came with its own set of challenges.
Everlasting Classics
The cheaper models don’t have the all-handmade aspect. They’re a bit of a mix. Some parts were totally handmade, and others were manufactured in factories. But overall, the idea was the same, the design was the same, and well, at the end of the day, they both told time, just like a cell phone.
Diamonds
This phenomenon is quite similar to diamonds. During the 1930s, at the peak of the great depression, people stopped spending money on diamonds because they were in abundance, and there was no reason to get them. In Europe, diamond prices had collapsed during the Depression, so there seemed little possibility of restoring public confidence in diamonds.
