John Spano
By 2015, John Spano had accumulated $75,000 from the company he worked for, Image First Healthcare Laundry Specialists outside of Cleveland, Ohio. But this money didn’t come from his salary, a bonus—-Spano stole it.

The company, however, didn’t notice the money was stolen for several months. Spano wasn’t actually reaching into the proverbial cookie jar and stealing money, Image First was paying him with funds they didn’t earn.

How? Spano was writing invoices for orders that didn’t exist. From there, he earned commission thanks to his position in sales, which amounted to roughly $75,000.

Crazy as it sounds, this wasn’t even Spano’s best scam, not by a long shot.

Early Beginnings
From an early age, Spano wanted people to think he was rich and successful.

His childhood friends say that Spano told them grandiose tales of rich relatives who would probably leave him millions one day. Spano was so enthusiastic and charismatic that many believed him.

Spano shared his childhood between New York and Ohio, where he grew up in a regular middle class household. It was a far cry from the fantasy life he spun to his friends.

But there was one aspect of his life that Spano didn’t lie about: his love for the New York Islanders.
The Big “D”
When he grew up, Spano moved to Dallas, Texas, a city known for its flashy big money culture. He fit in perfectly. He brought with him his two main characteristics—the tales of lavish wealth and a passion for Islander hockey.

Spano also started a leasing company, which was allegedly the source of his wealth in North Texas. Using his bold personality—and supposed business success—Spano worked his way to the top of Dallas society. This usually means hanging out with a Dallas Cowboys quarterback. The quarterback in question was 2-time Super Bowl winner Roger Staubach, who gladly took Spano in as his golf buddy.

He was also friends with Mario Lemieux, a hockey star who played for the Pittsburgh Penguin franchise.
