Leaders visit fair celebrating Cuba's cuisine
(9 Jan 2020) Top Cuban officials flocked to the opening of a three-day food fair in Havana Thursday which showcases the island's cuisine.
The event highlights the importance government officials place on the local production of food in a time of tightening U.S. sanctions and scarce foreign currency needed to fund imports.
President Miguel Diaz Canel, new Prime Minister Manuel Marrero, and First Lady Lis Cuesta attended the opening session, where chefs presented locally produced cheeses and hams.
The food fair was also attended by government-sponsored representatives from the island's growing tourism sector.
Cuba imports millions of dollars of basic food products every year, something the government wants to curtail by producing finished food products on the island to save hard currency for other needs.
The government also wants to highlight Cuban cuisine to entice food aficionados from around the world to visit the island to sample local dishes, along with rum and cigars.
The fair serves as a showcase for local dishes made by Cuban chefs, combining pork, seafood and organic produce in recipes unique to the island.
The government supports the event as another way of enhancing the tourism sector, an important component of the Cuban economy.
