400 LBS of corn starch and water smells awful when it begins to ROT!!! So here’s how this all happened. The Today Show reached out to me and said they wanted to do MORE experiments… so I said OF COURSE!!!! One of the experiments we began testing before we do it live in front of all of America is the “Oobleck” or “walking on water” experiment that makes use of corn starch and water as a non-Newtonian fluid. I must say I had a TON of fun with this experiment. And since the Today show always wants to go BIG… we went BIG and got 400lbs of corn start to fill a 10 gallon pool with oobleck. The one thing I forgot is that cornstarch has sugar in it, so if you add water and then leave it out in the open air it will ROT!!! And so it did just that, and over 400lbs of oobleck started to rot in my buddies back yard. The clean up was anything but fun as the smell was so intense I could taste it! I would describe it as sour socks meets four week old cottage cheese left out in the sun. I almost puked. Either way this experiment is super fun and can be done on a smaller scale. Below is how to make oobleck and it’s very not dangerous so this one is kid friendly… enjoy!!! Ohh and make sure to clean it up… because it will rot ; )
Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid; it has properties of both liquids and solids. You can dip your hand into it like a liquid, but if you quickly squeeze the oobleck or step on it, it will feel solid. The name oobleck actualy comes from the Dr. Seuss book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.” In the story oobleck is a gooey green substance that fell from the sky and wreaked havoc in the kingdom.
Making oobleck is easy. Here's a recipe:
Oobleck ingredients
• 1 part water
• 1.5 to 2 parts cornstarch
• Small amount of food coloring (optional)
