It’s almost back to school time, so to get your gears turning we created a SUPER FIZZY SUPER SIZE BATH BOMB OF SCIENCE!

We partnered up with an awesome educational toy company called Learning Resources. They have a new lab set called the Beaker Creature Liquid Super Lab. I am a HUGE fan of this toy! The best way to get kids stoked on science at an early age is to go where they’re already looking (toys). Beaker Creatures is a fun hands-on learning lab set that is also a collectible (35 different Beaker Creatures total). One of my favorite parts of Beaker Creatures is that each creature has its own planet that it belongs to and has real science facts connecting its name to its world and it’s physical attributes.

In this video, we learn how to make an ultra fizzy bath bomb. The way you do this is to make sure to avoid as much water as possible in the construction phase, meaning don’t use liquid dye or water to clump the bath bomb together. Instead, use powdered dye and 90% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol). You will see right away that this solution does not let the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and citric acid react before the bath bomb ingredients get submerged into a bath of water. It’s in the water that these two chemicals mix (in a classic acid-base reaction) and create CO2, which is what we see as the “fizzing”.

Side note, all of my grass lived as we emptied the hyperbaric chamber or SUPER SIZE LIQUID REACTOR bucket by bucket into my bathtub inside the house. Yes, it was a purple mess, but the grass lived!!!
