Portuguese go clubbing amid ease in virus rules
(2 Oct 2021) Lisbon residents danced into the early hours of Saturday after Portugal scrapped many of its remaining COVID-19 restrictions amid one of the most successful vaccine drives in the world.
After 19 months of closure, Portuguese nightclubs across the country reopened on Friday, much to the delight of clubbers and relief of club owners.
People had to show a COVID-19 certificate proving vaccination, recovery from the disease or a negative test to gain entry.
Outside some of the most popular venues and clubs, people queued for hours.
From October 1 Portugal also removed limits on how many people can be in cafes and restaurants, weddings and baptisms, shopping malls, concerts and cinemas.
The wearing of face masks is still mandatory on public transport, in hospitals and care homes, and in shopping malls.
As of this week Portugal is winding up its military-led vaccine task force after almost reaching its target of fully inoculating 85% of the population against COVID-19.
The Portuguese rollout is the most advanced in the world, with 84.88% of the country's 10.3 million having received jabs, according to Our World in Data.
