Significant Atlantic tropical storm likely next week - June 17, 2023

A new tropical disturbance is lurking off the coast of Africa, well to the south of Cape Verde, and could become a rare early season hurricane in the Main Development Region of the Atlantic Ocean. Indeed, to date there has never been a June hurricane in this region. This system is expected to form early next week, or earlier if the more aggressive computer model scenarios play out. Tropical Storm status could occur in as little as 36 hours.
This potential storm is likely to recurve before it reaches the Lesser Antilles, and turn northwards. In the meantime, it is likely to gradually develop and then become a substantial hurricane as it recurves.

Elsewhere, Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall on Thursday night in western Gujarat, India, and is still holding on to a lot of its power as it continues inland along the India/Pakistan border. The system will continue to degrade slowly as it proceeds in an easterly direction, passing south of New Delhi. Biparjoy is expected to dump another 250mm of rainfall on the southern side of the storm near its current location, this being on top of current rainfall totals.
