Cyclone Freddy a strong Category 4 near Rodrigues - February 19, 2023

Cyclone Freddy is making yet another run for Category 5 status this morning as it begins to affect Rodrigues, now being only 500 kilometers from the island. The storm may reach Category 5 intensity later this morning before gradual weakening begins. Whilst the storm is expected to pass to the north of Mauritius, hurricane force winds could still occur on the northern half of the island, and then will head towards Madagascar where it's expected to make a Category 4 landfall on Tuesday.

Rainfall threat for the Mascarene islands has decreased somewhat, owing to the storm's relatively quick movement, but Madagascar, Mozambique and Zimbabwe could all receive large amounts of rainfall amounting to 6-12 inches (150-300mm).

Damaging winds are likely to start affecting Mauritius on Monday, with dangerous destructive winds reaching the coast of Madagascar later on Tuesday.
