1989年にSLシリーズのの4代目(R129型)として登場。
ハードトップとキャンバス地の電動ソフトトップの両方を備え、車両の傾きを感知した際に起き上がり搭乗者を保護するロールオーバーバーと特別設計されたフレーム付バケットシート（ヘッドレストとシートベルトを一体化）を装備している。

1999年に登場した「リミテッド」はSL320をベースに特別装備を施した限定モデルであり、190E 2.5-16V EVO-IIと同じデザインのアルミホイールにイルミネイテッドステップカバー、本革とウォールナットによるコンビネーションのステアリングホイール及びシフトノブ、12連奏CDチェンジャーが装備されている。

搭載されるV型6気筒SOHC18バルブエンジンは3199ccの排気量から、最高出力224ps(165kW)/5600rpm、最大トルク32.1kg・m(314.8N・m)/3000～4800rpmを発揮した。
