Boeing 737-800 - flying KLM's retro bird from Vienna to Amsterdam in 4K
With the skies in Europe becoming more boring every day, a 737-800 might not sound like the kind of aircraft to cheer up enthusiast's souls. And usually it's not even cutting a video - there are millions of great 737 videos out there. Even more so when the airline you are about to fly seems like a low cost carrier like all those Ryanairs and Easy Jets, SASs and Lufthansas.
When booking a flight on KLMs webpage, this feeling even deepens. But as the online check in is available, there comes the first nice gimmick: KLM let's you know what plane that actually is you are about to fly. Of course nerds are in the know, but for the average traveller this is nice - especially if it shows the retro 737. Who could have known that it wold actually be this very plane flying.
PH-BXA is inside very much the same retro as outside, which means that the plane is simply old and worn down. Now this is ok, since it is KLM's oldest 737. But there was this certain low cost feeling again.
BUT it turned out that KLM is actually a full frills airline, with wonderful staff and even small snacks in economy. Not the usual junk food but nice, fresh sandwiches. Now this is not Beluga Caviar, but better than the disgrace other airlines in the EU offer. And a breakfast with a bottle of wine and a Heineken has a certain charm to it.
To sum it up: if it has to be a 737, take a KLM one. The service is great and on all my trips the staff was awesome. If you are lucky, you might end up with the retro plane or a -900 version, which is very rare in the EU. I can highly recommend KLM as an airline and would rank it just below TAROM in economy class.
Some browsers might not be able to show the video in 4K.
