Lyrics:
A solis ortu usque ad occidua
littora maris planctus pulsat pectora.
Ultra marina agmina tristitia
tetigit ingens cum merore nimio.
Heu me dolens, plango!
Franci, Romani atque cuncti creduli
luctu punguntur et magna molestia.
Infantes, senes, gloriosi praesules
matronae plangunt detrimentum Karoli.
Heu mihi misero!
Vae tibi, Roma, Romanoque populo
amisso summo glorioso Karolo.
Vae tibi, sola formosa Italia
Cuntisque tuis tam honestis urbibus
Heu me dolens, plango!
Francia diras perpessa injurias,
nullum jam tallem dolorem justinuit
Quando Augustum facundumque Karolum
in Aquisgrani glebis terrae tradidit.
Heu mihi misero!
O deus cunctae humanae militia
atque caelorum , infernorum domine-
In sancta sede cum tuis apostolis
suspice pium, o tu Christe, Karolum!
Heu me dolens, plango!
Heu mihi misero!
Big thanks for Emmanuel Farmakis for the correct order of the lyrics.
Translation (also by Emmanuel Farmakis) :
From the rising of the sun to the sea-shores
where it sets, lamentation beats upon the hearts of men.
Beyond the ocean-reaches men have been touched
by immense sadness and extreme sorrow.
O, how I grieve and mourn!
The Franks, the Romans and all believers
are tormented by grief and great distress.
Children, old men, glorious bishops
and matrons lament the loss of Charlemagne.
Alas for me in my misery!
How tragic for you, Rome, and for the Roman people
the death of the glorious Charlemagne!
Great sorrow for you too, most beautiful Italy,
and for all your well-respected cities.
O, how I grieve and mourn!
Dire sufferings has France endured,
yet never grief like unto this.
Now Charlemagne, voice of majesty and power,
to Aachen's soil she has given.
Alas for me in my misery!
O God of the hosts of all mankind
and of the heavens, lord over hell-
O Christ, receive into your holy dwelling
among your apostles the pious Charlemagne!
O, how I grieve and mourn!
Alas for me in my misery!
