If you're performing ab exercises to target the six pack muscles for hypertrophy, keep in mind that simply bending up and down at the waist is not going to the job done as far as an effective ab workout goes.⁣ You'll still get some stimulation this way as the abdominals work isometrically, but the majority of the work will be done by the hip flexors. ⁣The primary function of the abs is spinal flexion, AKA a typical "ab crunch" motion.⁣ Focus on driving your elbows down toward your knees while curling your torso and keeping the hips stationary. The kneeling rope crunch has been my main go to "six pack ab exercise" for many years, but it can end up being a huge waste of time if not done correctly.⁣ And as always, don't forget that having lean abs that are clearly visible is primarily an issue of having low enough body fat levels. Direct ab workouts are just a supplemental add on and it is generally true that "abs are made in the kitchen".
