Just because you're in a bulking phase with the goal of putting on muscle doesn't mean it's an excuse to get sloppy.
As in, having your only form of exercise be a few hours of lifting per week and then sitting completely immobile for the remainder of the time while shovelling back a massive calorie surplus you don't truly need.
Not judging - I've definitely been there myself, and most of you have seen my fantastically unattractive dirty bulking photos from the past where I was doing exactly that.
In fact, the saddest moment of my entire lifting career was the first cardio session back after I finally snapped out of it and decided to cut.
Went for a run at a local track and lasted all of about 7 excruciating, lung-scorching minutes before proceeding to wobble back to my car and throw my protein shake up all over the pavement.
Not optimal. (But lesson learned)
Even if your goal is to maximize muscle growth...
- You don't need a huge calorie surplus for optimal gains (~200-300 above maintenance will suffice in most cases) and there's no good reason to get flat out fat in the process (and many good reasons not to).
- You should still maintain some form of cardiovascular exercise as part of your week for optimal physical and mental health. Doesn't have to be 40 minute runs (I just chose this audio for the humor), but just find something you can stick to a few times a week, whether it be regular "gym cardio", an outdoor activity or some kind of active hobby.
