The Biggest Debate In Biology
Biologists know how to edit an organisms DNA, but they still don't have a solid answer for this seemingly simple question.
The Species Problem has plagued biologists going back as far as Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. It refers to a long standing disagreement between biologists over what the best definition for a species is. Most modern biology textbooks promote the biological species concept as the definition for what a species is.
But the biological species concepts doesn't apply to every organism. So if this definition is wrong, then what is a species? Do species actually exist? What if species dont exist, what if species aren't real? How do we classify organisms of we don't even have a solid species definition??
