This is part 3 of my series talking through some of the ways I analyse traders I might want to copy on eToro...

Today I'm having a look at the next suggested item - "Minimum Copy Period - 1 Year."

I think this suggestion is mainly there for people who are newer to trading (as I was when I joined eToro) and my guess is that it's meant to guard us against some common issues for new investors.

The first of these concerns the normal fluctuations which are so characteristic of normal market conditions. When I first saw the stock markets and started watching charts, I didn't understand that assets rarely move upwards in a straight line - it's peaks and troughs all the way, and in the beginning i didn't know that, and made a lot of bad decisions out of panic, when holding would have seen the problem right itself...

Next I discuss how the traders we're copying may just be trying to give themselves a realistic amount of time to make us enough profits that we'll be happy with them and carry on copying their trades...

The third reason is to do with the business cycle and earnings reports - it's possibly not as big of a reason as the first two, but worth mentioning...

Lastly I go over the answer Jaynemesis gave me when I asked him if there were any other reasons he suggests copying for longer timeframes. His answer was a god one, and the sort of thing you only really think of if you're a popular investor with a lot of other people's money copying your trades...
