Libya’s Largest Irrigation System in the World
Libya has built the world’s largest irrigation project. Called the Great Man-Made River, it utilizes over 1,300 wells and 2,800 kilometers of pipe to transport 6.5 million cubic meters of water a day from the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System in southern Libya to the populous cities in the north, including Tripoli and Benghazi, providing 70% of all freshwater used in Libya.
