A tusch to honor the tenure of CSO Music Director Riccardo Muti

Following the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus’ Sunday afternoon performance of Beethoven’s Missa solemnis – Maestro Riccardo Muti’s final concerts in Orchestra Hall as the ensemble’s 10th music director – members of the brass and percussion sections honored their leader with a tusch. The tradition of musicians playing a tusch – a musical flourish or brass fanfare, sometimes spontaneous and usually improvised – dates to the 17th century, and it is a rare honor bestowed upon a fellow musician. Bravo, Maestro Muti!
