Beirut’s Bank Raiders | Unreported World

For Unreported World, Krishnan Guru-Murthy follows one desperate Lebanese couple planning to raid a bank in order to get back their savings.

Across Lebanon over a million people have been locked out of their bank accounts. The so-called Switzerland of the Middle East catastrophically crashed in 2019 over a banking crisis which has since been likened to a Ponzi scheme.

Now those Lebanese people previously reliant on foreign currency savings accounts can only withdraw the equivalent of a few hundred pounds a month.

For those desperate enough, there is no alternative but to raid their bank, and take their money by force.
