What is the difference between Transference and Countertransference?
This video describes the differences between transference and countertransference. Both of the concepts originate with Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Both are redirections of emotions during a counseling session. Transference is when a client redirects emotions for another person onto the counselor. Transference can be useful is a counselor can recognize it and use it to progress counseling goals. Countertransference is when a counselor redirects emotions onto a client. Countertransference is destructive to the client. Supervision and high self-awareness can help a counselor avoid countertransference. Both concepts occur mostly outside conscious awareness.
