Late on Sunday morning, two elderly and perhaps intoxicated men sat on a bench outside a closed cigarette kiosk in north-east Kharkiv and shared opinions about a nearby firefight with leisurely interest.

“Look, Russians,” said one of them, nodding down the road. “They’re just standing there. Well, they’re not bothering anyone. Our guys must have gone somewhere else.”

A shell exploded somewhere closer than usual, and his companion spoke up.
