It turns out researchers found more uses for okra than a good pot of Gumbo. Okra could one day help us with removing microplastics from our wastewater. Flocculants are synthetic compounds that help remove solid debris out of wastewater by making it clump up at the bottom to be easily removed. Funny enough, researchers found that okra slime and other plant extracts can act as natural flocculants and do the same thing. Even better, they can remove microscopic pieces of plastic which have become an increasing challenge in the last few decades. Maybe, one day these natural alternatives can be used to replace synthetic flocculants that are currently in use.
