Solo: A Star Wars Story Review - Best Star Wars movie in Saga History 2018

If anything we can learn from "Solo: A Star Wars Story" ("Han Solo: A Star Wars Story"), is that our favorite rascal had lived many adventures before meeting Luke, Obi-Wan and Leia.

Of course, it has boasted of flying through the Kessel Corridor in 12 parsecs and navigating imperial ships, but this film contains at least three epic scenes - a work on a high-speed train on a snowy mountain, a fiery spatial confrontation with a super squid-style monster and explosive-filled shootout, so spectacular that compared to them the adventures of Han in the "Episode IV" are quite bland.

"Much bigger and louder" seems to have been the guidelines for this film, and although they could provide moments of pleasure on their own, it is doubtful that these pre-Skywalker adventures have really added anything of value to the character. It could be argued that it would even undermine the narrative arc of the hero in the first film.

This is the main problem of "Solo: A Star Wars Story", which had a background from the beginning. Unlike the character in a book or a play, Han Solo did not exist outside Harrison Ford, and both have a bond of more than 40 years of benevolence and nostalgia. Although no character is so precious that it can not be separated from the actor that made it memorable - even Indiana Jones had two younger versions - being in that position is still unenviable, since one is already at a disadvantage before it starts.

The man who took up the challenge, Alden Ehrenreich, does not look or sound like Ford and it's hard to accept at the beginning. One can not help but scrutinize each gesture, each smile, while trying to get used to it. Eventually one does it, and the talented Ehrenreich wins over the audience with his execution, capturing Han's spirit, his sarcasm, his selfishness and his charm with obvious ease.

Co-written by two Star Wars royalty, Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jonathan Kasdan, "Solo: A Star Wars Story" presents Han on his home planet, Corellia, where he works for a local mob boss while dreaming of escape, become a pilot and have a ship.

The first scenes are very dark, literally. It's an interesting aesthetic decision by film director Bradford Young, probably designed to give a sense of antiquity, but also distracted by creating in the viewer the impression that he is watching a VHS-worn copy of "Episode IV", where the faces alone they are clear in extreme close-ups and even then they are seen through a thick layer of fog and gauze, which eventually disappears.

Young Han is rudimentary and arrogant and invents things to go with the flow, without fear of lying or trusting his instincts. This is how he ends up not only leaving, but escaping from military service and joining a gang of criminals led by Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), who works as a mentor to the impressionable Han.

It is one of the many references devoid of subtlety to what is to come, and a saying that serves as a mattress in "Solo", where some of the most outstanding and pleasant moments are references to future memorable lines.

Soon they will meet Beckett's patron, Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany), and find an old friend of Corellia's Han, Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke), before leaving on a dangerous contraband mission.

Fans will have a lot to digest as the film moves quickly through a list of components about Han's origin, how he meets Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) and how he finds the Millennium Falcon. There are other key elements that are probably better left aside for the experience.

And that experience, in the clever hands of director Ron Howard, is largely pleasurable. One can not help but wonder what would have been the result if Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who were fired in the middle of production, would have taken their project to the end, or what it would have been like if Howard had been involved from the beginning, but there is no Cracks or obvious seams.

"Solo" is a piece of easy entertainment with very nice performances by Ehrenreich and Glover. This apparently is the most fun with the elegant demeanor and gestures typical of western Lando, despite the excessive action sequences. The best moments of "Solo" are the simplest ones: romance, friendships, egos clashes. Maybe a lesson for the inevitable sequel.
