Called "Little Berlin", this village inhabited by only fifty people was divided between east and west Germany by its own version of the Berlin wall. The border between Bavaria and Saxony was placed here in 1810 along the Tannbach stream. Following the lines of occupation decided upon, Mödlareuth found itself in both the Soviet and American zone of occupation.

With the establishment of two German states in 1949, the Thuringian part of the town belonged to the territory of the DDR, the Bavarian half of the Federal Republic.

Construction of a two metre wooden fence began in 1952 followed by more secure frontier 'protection'. Eventually the village was divided in 1966 by a 700m long, 3.4m high concrete wall.

Although tourists came to western Mödlareuth, including US vice president who said 'Ich bin ein Mödlareuther', it was strictly forbidden for anyone in the east to communicate with anyone in the west in any way.

On 9 December 1989 a border crossing for pedestrians was set up. The partial demolition of the wall on 17 June 1990 led to the birth of the German-German Museum Mödlareuth which you can see in this film - one of fifty or so places of remembrance along the former inter - German border.
I have placed many more films from the former inter - German border on this site. I hope that one day I will have the chance to be able to do the entire route of the border either on foot or by bicycle (as far as possible). Any help or ideas would be gratefully received.

There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- http://www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region.
