What is the use of Over Load Relay

Each motor must be protected from any possible faults to ensure long lasting and safe operation of the motors and to prevent damage from damage. Almost all industries rely on electric motors to control their processes and production. Therefore it is necessary to secure the failure of the motors. Overload relays are used as a device to protect the motor from damage from overload and overgrowth. The overload relay is connected to the connector, which you can see on the motor control panel and motor starters. An overload relay is a device that protects an electric motor against overload and power line failure.

Principle of operation of thermal overload relay

A thermal overload relay is working principle of electro-thermal properties in a bimetallic strip. The current flowing through the motor flows through the OLR poles. The dipole strip is heated directly or indirectly by the current and it is bent when the stream current exceeds the set value.

Overload relays always work together with the contactors. When the bimetallic strips get hot, the current travel contact is activated which in turn breaks the power supply to the contactor coil de-energizing it and breaking the current of the motor. This tripping time is always inversely proportional to the current flow through the overload relay. Therefore the greater the current flow, the faster the overload relay trip. Therefore, thermal overload relays are referred to as current dependent and inverse time delayed relays.

Overload Relay Working

The dipole thermal overload relay works on the heating properties of the bimetallic strip. In the direct heating method, the entire flow of the motor flows through the OLR. Therefore, it is directly heated by the current. But in the case of indirect heating, the dipole strip is placed in close contact with the current-carrying conductor inside the OLR Excessive current flow to the motor heats the conductor and the dipole strip. The conductor will be insulated so no current flows through the strip.
