Nano-particles: A tiny solution to a huge problem | Josh Davies | TEDxCardiffUniversity

Nano-particles come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. From nano-cubes and nano-rods to nano-whiskers.
By changing the shape of these tiny nano-particles, we can detect diseases more accurately and cheaply than ever before. Josh discusses the growth of nano-science from a simple idea in 1959 to the huge field that it is today. He’ll answer the question: Can we diagnose a disease as simply as swiping right on Tinder? Josh Davies is a Nanoscientist and a scientific communicator, who enjoys taking the complex ideas of science and making them understandable to anyone. Josh Is studying his PhD at Cardiff University in partnership with cotton-mutton diagnostic. His work looks at the growth of nanoparticles and the effect their shape has upon their optical properties with a focus on magneto-optical diagnosis.
Since starting his PhD Josh has won numerous prizes for his talks including winning the Cardiff Three Minute Thesis competition and reaching the final of the enriching student life awards as best postgraduate tutor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
