Sunba Illuminati Cross Line Tracking or Lack There of

I have a total of three Sunba Cameras, two Illuminaties and one 601. I love the Sunba cameras however the firmware and software leave a lot to be desired. Sunba is a small company and while you get great customer service and technical support, development and bug killing is slow so be prepared to spend a lot of time setting the cameras up except for very basic installations.

One feature that I would like to be able to use and can’t wait for it to mature is tracking. I estimate that 1 in 20 activations result in a good track of the subject. This video is about a 12 hour period, most of which is daylight tracks however the same problem occurs at night. The Sunba even had trouble tracking cars that came down my driveway. Watch the video and make your own determination.

The Illuminati and 601 have internal IR illuminators which work great either in a protected area or on a night void of rain and fog. If you have a camera with internal IR Illuminators you know the problem all to well. Water reflects IR very well and as a result an internal IR camera lights up rain and fog just in front of the lens. The result is what appears to be HUGE drops of rain or a white out when dealing with fog. I live in Oregon where we have lots of both. The only solution that I have found is to disable the internal LEDs by unplugging them or putting electrical tape over the LEDs. Next you place supplemental IR Illuminators where you want coverage, wide angle Illuminators close in and spot Illuminators for those far away shots. Amazon has lots of the Illuminators but choose wisely. These Illuminators should be placed no closer than 5 feet from the camera. When I first got my Illuminati’s I was getting over 200 activations per night during rain and fog when using the internal LEDs. The internal LEDs are great and work well at distances well past 200 feet but only on clear nights. I taped over the internal LEDs and put up external Illuminators. My cameras are limited to 270 degrees due to placement on the corner of buildings so I used three Illuminators to get good coverage. Now I get very few activations at night and most are due to animals or a large leaves blowing in the wind. I have the camera sensitivity set to 30% at night and 70% for day time (as recommended by Sunba).

I would love for someone to develop a good IR LED system ( like the Sunba Illuminators) that could be mounted away from the camera but synced by the camera. My hope is that Sunba will see the light and make such a product. While we are talking about Illuminators it should be noted that the Sunba cameras, as of this writing (November of 2020) use the visible IR Illuminators so be sure to buy the correct frequency of Illuminators. I am sure at some point Sunba will switch to the invisible Illuminators but we are not not there yet.

I just purchased a Network Video Recorder (NVR) so I will not be using a browser to access the cameras, at least that is my hope.

In short the Sunba cameras are great cameras at a good price point but I highly recommend playing with it on the bench for a long time to learn what works and what does not work and how settings in one tab may affect other setting. Plan on spending some time corresponding with Robin for technical support.
