Cats of Tunisia

Tunis is full of cats of all kinds as well. But honestly Tunisian cats don’t look too good comparing to those I met in other countries.

As I knew very few cats are adopted as pets in North Africa, but generally the cats are friendly, well-kept and energetic. Tunisians might not be filling their homes with pets, but that’s probably because the cats are having far too much fun being cared for by the community.

When I was surfing the web to find what other people think about Tunisian cats, I stumbled upon one of the posts on Tripadvisor. ‘… the trouble is I have a phobia against cats and I believe that these roam freely in all hotels en masse in these type of countries’. The other guys replies with ‘Bigger problem for you might be going out to local restaurants because there the street cats might come to beg for food while you are eating. Mostly they are easy to chase away but here also the feeding tourist is a problem and sometimes them cats can be very insisting...’

It’s really hard to imagine some people might have cats phobia, but Tunisian cats are really omnipresent. This cat I met in Roman theatre in the ancient town of Carthage. If you’re a cat lover like me, Tunisia is definitely a must-visit location.

With a rich food culture involving meat and fish, it’s no wonder many hotels even have their own ‘in-house’ cats. Some tourists bring them food and some left-overs from the restaurants so these cats would say they’re happy with their lifestyle if they could speak. But when you want to walk around the city, you might be really surprised by the number of skeletal cats lurking in the shadows. Don’t forget to bring some food with you, they’ll really appreciate it.
