2020 Yamaha MT-03 Review | Better Suspension | More Refined
Yamaha's 2020 MT-03 has followed in the footsteps of the R3 sportsbike, with an updated suspension system that is ideally tuned for everyday riding, alongside a styling overhaul, with a new headlight assembly and sportier tank and radiator/intake cowls.
The popular 321cc twin-cylinder engine remains and still offers just over 30 kW, or 42 horsepower, while 30 Nm of torque is also on offer. Not class leading figures but the MT-03 has arguably the smoothest and most tactile engine character in the category, with a level of refinement and user friendly nature that's hard to match.
Brakes are likewise simple systems, backed up by ABS, but offering plenty of performance for the light machine, weighing in under 170 kg. There's not crazy levels of bite, but the power is there and good modulation, meaning new riders won't be intimidated and it's all about control.
A low 780 mm seat height and small proportions also makes the MT-03 an incredibly easy motorcycle to jump onto, while larger riders might find the MT-03 on the compact side. For me locking between the pegs and tank was easy and ideal, but I can see much larger or longer legged riders perhaps finding that a little cramped. However for shorter riders the reach to the ground is incredibly easy, which with the light overall weight makes for an easy to manage machine.
Being a roadster or nakedbike the MT-03 also features wide bars and easy handling, with an agile and nimble character around town and through the twisties but with good stability at speed.
Overall I highly recommend checking out the MT-03, it may not have switchable ABS, or knobbies, but that's because it's a road bike and those are well outside the scope of what you should expect.
