A boy, a bear, and a new life beyond the past | Alex Kane | TEDxStormont

At the age of almost six Alex Kane, a mute, traumatised, terrified boy, left an orphanage for his adoptive home. The first thing he saw there was a bear, a present from his new parents. It scared him so much that he hid it under his bed for more than a year. But then one day he lifted it up again, dusted it down, and discovered that the bear could talk to him. It was the beginning of the journey which led Alex to the point at which he was restored and strong enough to leave his past behind him. He tells the moving story of his adoption and how one special bear helped him find his voice. At the age of six, having been in an orphanage for two years, Alex Kane was assessed by two psychiatrists as almost certainly educationally sub normal. Fortunately for him, Alex’s adoptive parents ignored both the assessment and the fact that he hadn’t actually spoken for the two years he was in the orphanage. He is now one of Northern Ireland’s best known political columnists and commentators, working across a range of television, radio and social media platforms. His approach to life can be summed up in the words of Eden Ahbez: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
