Gouache Tutorial ✶ How I paint from reference photos ✶ Scottish Countryside

It's far too easy to ignore something we see every day. The fields we drive past, the trees we walk past, and the wildflowers growing by the bins. Often times they become so normal to us that when we are in search for a beautiful subject to paint, they aren't the first thing we think of.

It has been too long since I painted the beautiful green rolling hills that surround me up here in the Scottish Highlands so I decided to honor them in this painting.
I tend to paint mountains and lush forests and coastal scenes, but painting this serene field was just what I needed to push myself. Painting with all these greens is challenging! And deciding where to put the focus was even more of a challenge.

In this tutorial I'll walk you through how I paint scenes like this from reference, how I break it down to find my focus and some more thoughts about colors and mixing gouache.
