CTS forges a partnership with the UCLA Black Male Institute (BMI)

We are excited to share that the UCLA Black Male Institute (@bmiucla) is joining forces with CTS. BMI is now housed within our Center and will maintain its focus on equity and access for Black males. In 2020, BMI founder and Director Dr. Tyrone Howard was named our Faculty Director, and BMI’s mission naturally aligns with the goals of CTS in achieving equity and racial justice in schools. This framework will allow BMI access to additional support and resources from our Center and facilitate collaboration opportunities between BMI and CTS scholars. 

BMI aims to address concerns around equity and access for Black males in education by conducting reliable research, making practical interventions, and creating effective programs that enrich the educational experiences of Black males in the United States. BMI has hosted workshops focused on preparing young Black males for college, and has brought together educators and community members at its annual Think Tank. 

Recent murders of Black citizens at the hands of police and racial inequities surfaced by the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the need for scholarship to focus on Black achievement and well-being. In light of these events revealing racism and anti-Blackness both inside and outside of schools, BMI’s work remains critical.

Our Center is excited about the scholarship, lived experience and expertise that the BMI team brings to our Center. It is an honor and a privilege for us to welcome the Black Male Institute to join us in the mission of changing systems and stakeholders in order to support equitable educational outcomes for historically underserved students. Together, we look forward to continuing the challenging and meaningful work of fighting for racial justice in schools and communities through research, policy and practice.
