Why Did Obi Wan Kenobi Allow Vader To Live On Mustafar?

The duel between the newly turned Darth Vader and Obi Wan led to the dark lords defeat, whereby the dark lord lost his limbs and suffered severe burns. But this begs the question, why did Kenobi allow Vader to live when he could have ended his reign of terror there and then? The first reason was of course because he found it to provide the killing blow to his former apprentice and friend. However, the most important reason was due to his Jedi teachings. Kenobi later wrote in his diary that he feared that killing Vader would have led him down a dark path, following in the footsteps of Anakin when he killed a disarmed Dooku. He therefore decided to spare his former apprentice, leaving him to the fate of the force.
