Ok, Old Man! The Rebuttal - Old School Vs New School Dog Trainers
The Millennial Defense (from Matt Wilson):
As I began the video featuring the Jaded Dog Trainer sharing his perception of "new school" dog trainers, with his "jaded" attitude ... I was like; "Ok, this is normal". However, when he choose to come at me by name. That, my friends, called for a rebuttal!
There's no way I'd let that slide without comment (haha). At the very least, I had to get on here and give my share of smack talk about the old man, AKA "The Jaded Dog Trainer". But before I dish out the smack, I'll start with a piece of humble pie... To be fair, he does make some great points in his video. The book he refers to is one of the best books for dog training ever written! There are many "old school" techniques that are still very popular (and for good reason).
But… The Jaded Dog Trainer failed to remember that this "millennial generation" is the first with access to such a wide range of information - thank you internet! Good, or bad, we are always learning and incorporating new techniques into our training. And having the ability to share information and advice so easily; using a bit from "Joe", and something from "Sam", etc. gives us "millennials" a big advantage. We don’t have to rely on a single book, a single method, or only seek advice from the few people we have access to.
No longer are the days of spending considerable amounts of money to travel across the country to sit in a weekend seminar for a few tidbits from the big name trainer. Today, if I want to look up techniques from @primalcanine, or Working Dog Radio's reach of trainers - there are videos and virtual seminars that I can access at my convenience! I can watch hours of Carlos Ramirez on decoy work, Nezbeth on shaping, and nearly anyone else notable that I care to learn from - simply by logging into a FREE app or subscribing to their website/podcast. I can take what they say and practice it at my leisure. If it works for me, awesome! If not, I can seek additional advice, or tweak it as I see fit. But this generation is the first to be able to learn at such a rapid speed, and exponentially improve our craft. ... Not sure you can say the same about the industry of yester year, Mr. "Old School".
Before I go, I would like to point out - both myself and The Jaded Dog Trainer humbly realize that there's always room for improvement and we both continue to learn and develop our skills. I personally think it's important to learn from all - those that came before me, and those that are killing it in this new age.
