Jake Hutchinson: Avalanche Rescue Dogs - K9 Spotlight

Jake Hutchinson or as we know him, simply, "Hutch"

Avalanche Dog Trainer Jake Hutchinson has been training air-sensing dogs for search and rescue deployment for over 20 years. And for the first time in 10 years, Jake is getting his personal 2-year-old dog Colt ready for his first season as a validated working dog. The two have been working closely together to sharpen Colt’s air scent work and keep his mind and nose-work at peak performance. Soon, Colt will put all of his training into practice, and help to quickly find and rescue avalanche victims.

I remember when I first learned about Jake, I was just going through tagged photos on Instagram and seeing this all-black Malinois, rocking our NOMAD harness, getting after it in the snow. Then we had a ski patrol operator come to the shop for a custom NOMAD harness for his Ski Patrol dog. He had another harness that failed him on the lift and it was catastrophic. When asked where he heard about us, “Jake Hutch sent me here to get this harness” was his response. And so I decided I needed to know Jake.

There's a thing about search and rescue - it’s not glamorous. You buy thousands of dollars in gear that most times is single-use. You trust companies that make this gear to save your life and/or the life of your dog; so that you can potentially save others. AVY SAR often heads out in sub-zero degree temps, and if you are like Jake, you ski with your dog on your back. When I started to figure out who the man really was, I learned that he has 30 years it AVY experience! Every single person we knew in the AVY dog world knew who he was and was clear that he is the best at what he does.

He bought the NOMAD Harness himself, before ever knowing us on a professional level. And, he promoted our products, without ever being paid or asked. What's crazy to us - when we developed the NOMAD, we had police and military in mind; SAR was a bit of an afterthought. After working with Jake, we were able to tweak some things on the harness that has only made it even better!

We sat down with Jake, and his K9 partner, Colt, to learn about the use of K9s in avalanche search and rescue work. Hope you enjoy this month's K9 Spotlight interview!
