The History of Makeup | Time Travel Series with Scott Barnes: The Roaring 20's

Grab your most fabulous feather boa and join me on a trip back to the Roaring 20s! The economy is booming, flapper girls are causing a stir at jazz clubs, and Prohibition is spawning a bustling scene of speakeasies from coast to coast.

It was an era of women’s liberation and independence, and makeup and cosmetics took center stage as young female urbanites dared to be different.

Pencil thin, elongated brows were the cornerstone of the 1920s flappers, inspired by the silent film stars of the day. Garish eyeshadow colors, deep-red lips, and dark, defined eyelashes encapsulated the look. Rouge was applied to the apples of the cheeks rather than the cheekbones, and big, round eyes added a hint of youthfulness to an otherwise ostentatious look.

Liberating bob-cut hairstyles replaced stuffy, high-maintenance Victorian coifs, and women abandoned their corsets in favor of less restrictive garments that let them move and dance freely. And dance they did!
