The 90s gave birth to iconic fashion shows, television series, dial-up internet, new music genres, and blockbuster movies. Nickelodeon and MTV ruled the small screen, while supermodels ruled the runway—and the world—with their beauty.

Unlike the boisterousness of previous decades, the 90s saw a turn toward simple, low-maintenance styles. A generation that some called “apathetic” championed minimalist, almost sartorial fashion: spaghetti strap slip dresses, overalls, chokers, and combat boots.

Grunge, inspired by the edgy look and sound of bands like Nirvana, was the peak of fashion. At the same time, 90s hip hop fashion saw flashy, oversized jackets, big chains, and bucket hats.

90s makeup ran the gamut. Everyone wore nude, brown or burgundy lips with liner, and eyeshadow ranged from smokey brown and muted monochromes to frosty blues and pinks. Contouring was becoming more popular and brows were thin and arched. Body glitter also made its debut in the 90s.
