1. The Republic of Khakassia is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia.

2. The first state in the territory of Southern Siberia appeared presumably in the 4th-3rd centuries BC. In 201 BC, the Dinlin state, according to Chinese sources, was conquered by the Huns. In the 17th century, Russian settlers in Siberia found this region divided into four principalities (uluses) inhabited by Kyrgyz - the ancestors of Khakas and Shor peoples. In 1604, the first contacts between Kyrgyzes and Russians began, when Tomsky stockaded town was built on the land of Eushtin Tatars. After that, for over 100 years, Khakassia was going through a complicated and painful process of becoming part of the Russian state.

3. Abakan is the capital city of the Republic of Khakassia.

4. Shamanism has always played and continues to play an important role in the life of Khakassian society. They conduct ceremonies, lead craft groups, treat illnesses, bring the souls of unborn children to be with their countrymen, and accompany the souls of the deceased to the other world.

5. Khakassia also has the most ancient astronomic observatory in Asia. The observatory’s age comes to almost 18,000 years and it is called as “Sunduki” (chests) massif. For example, the “Stonehenge” age dates back to 2000 – 3100 BC. It turns out that the Khakassian observatory is older more than three times.

6. Khakassia is famous for its numerous lakes. There are about 1,000 various lakes in its territory. Such lakes as Balankul, Belye, Dikoye, Tagarskoye, Itkul, Shira are curative. They are quite popular resting places where for many centuries different diseases have been treated. “Siberian Italy” or rather “Siberian Switzerland” is the epithet which can be heard in relation with Khakassian region. Well, it is this region of Siberia which distinguishes favorably with its geographic position. The local winter is not very cold and wind is almost dry there, while spring is an unheard-of rage of colors of the nature wakening.

7. According to ancient tradition, Khakass men grow their hair long and braid it in a tight braid, a kichege, which symbolizes their close bond with the heavens, the spiritual world of Tengri [The main god of the Turkic pantheon, considered to be the chief god who created all things, and which has been worshiped by Central Asian and Eastern European people’s since the sixth century, but which may have roots in China dating back ten centuries prior.
