Getting From Here to There: Clinical Lab 2.0 in the Value-Based Era

With the rapidly changing landscape of American health care, there is both opportunity and great need for creative and innovative solutions for better delivery of health care. The clinical laboratory generates 70% of the structured data in the health record and its professionals see the data first and have tremendous expertise in what those data mean.

To date, however, the clinical laboratory has been largely transactional in the generation of information – what can be termed “Clinical Lab 1.0." This lecture discusses value statements coming from “Clinical Lab 2.0” that involve integration of laboratory-generated knowledge into health care programming at the health system level, working with clinical leaders and stakeholders to close ambulatory gaps-in-care, more effectively manage acute episodes of care and achieve better health care outcomes at the population level. After viewing this lecture, participants should be able to:

1. Identify key stakeholders in the transition of laboratory services from volume to value
2. Describe at least three challenges to demonstrating the value of a clinical laboratory to the health system
3. Explain at least two examples of actionable data-centric interventions to improve clinical quality and financial value
