Myths about memory

Some myths about our memory! Most of these I hear all the time! Hopefully, you'll learn something and enjoy the video!

Myths:
#1:
Only 5 - 9 pieces of information can be stored in our short-term memory.
Not true, 5 - 9 chunks of information can be stored.

#2:
Your memory is finite.
We can't run out of memory in our lifetime. The memory is "infinite". The Scientific American wrote this: "The human brain consists of about one billion neurons. Each neuron forms about 1,000 connections to other neurons, amounting to more than a trillion connections. If each neuron could only help store a single memory, running out of space would be a problem. You might have only a few gigabytes of storage space, similar to the space in an iPod or a USB flash drive. Yet neurons combine so that each one helps with many memories at a time, exponentially increasing the brain’s memory storage capacity to something closer to around 2.5 petabytes (or a million gigabytes). For comparison, if your brain worked like a digital video recorder in a television, 2.5 petabytes would be enough to hold three million hours of TV shows. You would have to leave the TV running continuously for more than 300 years to use up all that storage."

#3:
Photographic memory is real.
This is THE MYTH about memory. There is no proof that photographic memory actually exists. One under the pseudonym "Elizabeth" seemed to have this ability but married the one assessing her ability and later refused to do more tests. However, she may have had an eidetic memory. Another phenomenon that might seem to be photographic memory is the one about "hyperthymesia" which are extraordinary memories of ones owns life, but this is no photographic memory.

#4:
Not even 1% has an eidetic memory.
This depends on the age of the eidetiker. 2% to 15% of children in the age under 12 have this ability.

#5:
Natural memory is better than trained memory.
No-one of those who have won the "World Memory Championships" has ever claimed that they have a photographic or eidetic memory. Only that they’ve trained themselves to have an amazing memory with mnemonic strategies, mnemonic techniques. In memory talk, trained always beats natural.

Now that's some facts about memory! Hope you learned something!

Sorry if I sound a little more tired than usual! I was really stressed to get this video out!
