TUMMY TUCK: Recovery Time & Tips
A tummy tuck is considered major surgery so there will be issues involving pain, swelling and bruising that may take several weeks to resolve. Your regular routine can continue after several weeks but full recovery takes about six weeks. To help you experience an easier recovery, Dr. Jerome Edelstein offers several tips.
1) Take your prescribed pain medication as scheduled. Too much pain interferes with the healing process. Even if you feel good, take the meds to prevent a sudden spike in pain.
2) Follow the surgeon’s advice. After surgery, you will receive instructions that detail how to care for the incision, when to change bandages, when showering is allowed and what to do if certain symptoms or problems arise.
3) Take the prescribed antibiotics as scheduled – on time and in full to ensure complete healing.
4) Get lots of rest, sleeping flexed at the waist for at least the first several days. Getting up and moving is also important, though, to maintain good blood flow and prevent clots. Restrict your level of activity for up to three weeks (no working out).
5) Do not smoke until sutures are removed and the incision is healed. Smoking interferes with blood flow and the rate of healing.
6) Wear an abdominal support garment beginning in the recovery room according to the doctor’s instructions. An additional garment should be purchased so one can be worn while the other is cleaned.
7) If you have surgical drains (not all patients do!), clean them up to three times daily watching for bright red blood or a foul smell.
