Windy City Wonderland: Art on theMart
Art on theMart showcased a holiday-themed winter light show known as the “Windy City Wondeland” that kicked-off last November 2019. The light show will take viewers on an animated journey around Chicago's famous skyline with an extended Fall Program that included works of some great contemporary artists.
With the introduction of permanent audio speakers on the Riverwalk jetty artists can curate music or songs go along with their projections making for a fully immersive experience.
Art on theMart display is located in Merchandise Mart on Upper Wacker Drive between Franklin and Wells Streets in Chicago, Illinois, and best viewed on The Chicago Riverwalk between Wells and Lake St. The Riverwalk is accessible via any of the stairways along Wacker Dr. There are ADA compliant ramps providing Riverwalk access located at the east side of State St., the west side of Clark St., and the west side of Franklin St.
The Merchandise Mart is a commercial building located in downtown Chicago, Illinois. When it was opened in 1930, it was the largest building in the world. This art deco structure is located at the junction of the Chicago River's branches.
Every night, a 25-story-tall video installation takes over the side of the Merchandise Mart, filling the building's historic facade with vibrant colors and moving images. Harnessing 34 digital projectors, the show features work by a rotating lineup of artists. Art on theMART lights up the night Wednesday through Sunday, with projections beginning approximately 30 minutes after sunset. It’s not time specific so check your weather schedules.
Art on theMART is the largest permanent digital art projection in the world, projecting contemporary artwork across the 2.5 acre river-façade of theMART. This expansive permanent piece of public art continues Chicago’s legacy of providing both residents and visitors with exceptional art that is both free and accessible to all.
The program content rotates every season and is selected with the assistance and expertise of the Curatorial Advisory Board. Projections are free for public viewing two hours a night for ten months of the year (March – December), beginning approximately 15 to 30 minutes after sundown. The projections are regularly on view five nights a week from Wednesday – Sunday.
