Today I'm in the city of Smolensk. Smolensk! Smolensk is the capital of Smolensk Oblast and the 54th biggest city in the Russian Federation. Founded in 863, Smolensk has an incredible history as one of the oldest cities in Russia. The city has been taken over by different countries more times than any other city in Russia - being invaded by the Mongols, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the French Empire led by Napoleon, and Nazi Germany led by Hitler. Owing to its long and rich history, Smolensk is home to many fine examples of Russian architecture ranging from the Kievan Rus period to post-WWII Stalinist architecture. Although the city was destroyed several times over, many historically and culturally significant buildings still remain, including a large number of churches and cathedrals. Today, Smolensk is noted for its electronics, textiles, food processing, and diamond faceting industries. Let’s explore!
