UCLA Arts launches public art program with Red Car

Nova Jiang’s large-scale installation, Red Car, which resembles a giant replica of plastic model parts that children snap off a plastic frame before assembling them into a finished model, will be seen for the first time on Saturday at the opening of the $350-million Village at Westfield Topanga, an upscale open-air mall located in the Warner Center in the San Fernando Valley.

Jiang, who graduated from the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture in 2009 with an M.F.A., won an art competition that was open to UCLA students and alumni to create a major installation with a $200,000 budget for the new mall after UCLA and Australia-based Westfield Corp. partnered on an art-in-public-spaces program. Jiang’s playful concept using the red car and evoking its historic role in shaping the San Fernando Valley bested more than 40 other proposals.
