Is age REALLY nothing but a number? Ethics and decision-making in adolescent medicine
Trainees are taught that “children are not just little adults;” this dictum holds true for pediatric medicine as well as pediatric bioethics. A particularly complex subset of pediatric bioethics focuses on ethics and decision-making regarding adolescents. Not yet legally adults but generally more developmentally advanced than younger children, how best to integrate adolescents into their healthcare decision-making is very challenging. This complexity is even more evident in the setting of serious illness and/or end-of-life. This session will explore the medical, ethical, and developmental nuances of adolescence, along with how to consider both the perspectives and interests of adolescent patients in healthcare decision-making. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about adolescent ethics, including unique challenges around adolescent refusals of potentially life-saving therapy.
